Dual-Eligible (Medicare + Medicaid)

A category most folks have never heard of
D-SNPs (Dual-Eligible Special Needs Plans) only exist for people who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid. They're some of the most generous plans on the market, and a surprising number of folks who qualify never enroll because no one ever told them about it.
If you're on a fixed income, retired, or living with a chronic condition, it's worth a 10-minute call to check. Even partial Medicaid benefits (like the Extra Help subsidy for prescriptions) can save a person on Medicare hundreds of dollars a year.
What the extras can look like
Plans vary by carrier and state, but typical D-SNP extras include:
A monthly grocery allowance loaded on a debit card (often $50–$200/month, restricted to healthy foods)
Transportation to and from doctor visits and the pharmacy
A monthly over-the-counter benefit for things like vitamins, cold medicine, first-aid supplies
Dental, vision, and hearing aids beyond what standard Medicare covers
Sometimes utility bill credits or a flex card for other approved health expenses
We'll show you exactly what's available where you live.

How do I know if I qualify for Medicaid?
Each state sets its own income and asset limits. We'll walk through them with you in a 10-minute call. You may also qualify for partial benefits, like Extra Help paying for prescription drugs, without qualifying for full Medicaid.

What's a D-SNP?
A Dual-Eligible Special Needs Plan is a Medicare Advantage plan designed specifically for folks who have both Medicare and Medicaid. They often include extras like a monthly grocery allowance, transportation to medical appointments, over-the-counter benefits, and dental/vision coverage that standard Medicare doesn't pay for.
-
Will being on Medicaid affect my Medicare benefits?
No. They work together. Medicare pays first for medical costs, and Medicaid helps cover what Medicare doesn't, premiums, copays, and some services Medicare excludes. Folks who qualify for both often have very low out-of-pocket costs.
-
Can I change my plan more often if I'm dual-eligible?
Yes. Folks with both Medicare and Medicaid (or with the Extra Help subsidy) get a Special Enrollment Period quarterly during the first 9 months of the year, plus the standard AEP in the fall.
